A Summery Spring/Prelude To The Sequel Of My Planting Adventure

The grass glimmers green; the wind sways its way through sleepy trees; the great blue sky dabbles its coat with whip-cream clouds; and the sun hangs on to the passing day. This is the transitional period between Spring and Summer - the season of glory (as I like to call it). The breeze is strong enough to keep the critters at bay, and the waters are chilled from melted sheets of ice; giving the air a nice cool composure.

I'm back to the simple life, a life I lived not so long ago. The simplicity of it all is comforting yet uneventful. I enjoy being back out in the country; there's not a lot of pressure or commotion, just peace and nature. However, my newly adapted city-mind wishes not to fade away just yet, and I yearn to take one more stroll down the streets of Toronto before I embark into the big bad bush.

On the 1st of May, I will be flying out West to work with the hippies once again, to continue my planting adventure. This time around is going to be a little different. Having planted already for a full season, I'm most likely expected to be hitting some high numbers early on in the month. To my misfortune, I am a little out of shape; mainly as a result of more mental exercise than physical exercise (the joys of final exams). Yet although the first week may very well prove to be more arduous than I expected, I think I will slowly but surely catch on, and hopefully get right back on track. It should be a different experience this time around; I've convinced a couple friends of mine to lend their summers to the bush, and I only hope they know what they're getting into. I can ramble on all day about the joys of living in the bush, not too mention the terrors and frustrations. Sure the money may be great, but it's a bitch to make - I only hope my two new cohorts understand this.

So I haven't started packing, let alone unpacking my university junk, but I'm thinking tommorow I'll start gathering things together. I'm a little concerned about the shape my tent is in, last I used it the front door was seriously malfunctioning due to a broken zipper. I might have to do a little handywork. I would like to get some more long-sleeved clothing from MEC, and maybe some other goodies on the side. Hopefully they'll have just what I need in stock.

The past couple of days have been comfortable, a little boring, but I've been finding new ways to amuse myself that do not require a computer, high-speed internet, or intoxicants. For instance, I went on a long bike ride today to the Library. The uphill slog back was tiresome, and made me realize that my cardio-vascular level of fitness needs to be amped up. The summer labours should compensate for this, however I think I might start running.. if I can work up the will.

I've been thinking a lot about growing up, and sometimes the amount of responsibility I foresee makes me shudder in worry. I have so far been enjoying my new life as a student, and it's strange knowing that adulthood is around the corner. I hope these last four years are well spent. I want to be ready for the world, but I want the world to be ready for me. Something inside of me keeps nagging me to get my act together, yet the treeclimbing child in me wants me to have fun. A lot of this year could have been spent doing more interesting productive things (aside from the wonders of film and music), but I think I made the most of it (by partying every chance I got). I guess what I'm trying to say is that I hope next year's equilibrium between fun and work is relatively balanced, so I can properly mature yet still live it up like a teenager. I'm going to be twenty years old in June, which is quite a big step for me. I will be an adult! A young one at that, but still an adult! It's both exciting and strange.

As much as I would like to write more, I want to end this precursor to adventure off on a simple note. I'm about to dive right back into the dirt, trees and bugs, and I hope you all check this blog regularly for updates. I'm thinking about the idea of video updates (if I were to find a way to upload footage.. maybe if I brought my laptop with me), or even just photos. Nevertheless, this new collection of personal memoirs will be packed full of gory and glory - all the details you need to get a taste of the adventure.

For all you fellow adventurers out there, may your travels be safe, memorable, and enjoyable!

Stay tuned for updates from the far west!
